The Runaway out on DVD

Following the success of Martina Cole’s The Take, an impressive British cast lines up for Sky 1’s second adaptation of the bestselling author’s gritty crime novels, The Runaway, coming to DVD on 9th May 2011 courtesy of ITV STUDIOS Home Entertainment.

The stellar cast is headed up by Emmy® nominee and Tony Award winner Alan Cumming (The Good Wife, X-Men) starring in his first British TV role in fifteen years.

His challenge is to take on the role of Desrae, the flamboyant transvestite who takes the young runaway, Cathy Connor, played by debutant Joanna Vanderham, under her wing.  Cumming and Vanderham are joined by Ken Scott (Messiah), Keith Allen (Robin Hood) and Jack O’Connell (Skins) to form an intriguing mix of characters.

When Cathy (Vanderham) is sent into care, it rips apart the fragile dreams she had with her childhood sweetheart, Eamonn Docherty, played by the edgy O’Connell, forcing her to choose a life on the streets of London’s Soho. The runaway flees straight into the arms of Desrae, who helps her survive in the heart of London’s underworld.

Left with little in his life Eamonn refuses to resist temptation and is drawn into a life of crime, fleeing to New York to escape his demons.

The story descends into a tale of sleaze as London reaches its murky climax in the 70’s, with police corruption, the IRA and industrial strikes capturing a nation’s mood that many will remember.

The past is never far behind and as Cathy and Eamonn are drawn back together, it eventually catches up with them.

Burn Gorman (Torchwood), Kierston Wareing (The Take), Max Irons (Dorian Gray) and Mark Womack (Liverpool 1) also star in this unmissable six-part drama.

First Review Of The Runaway

The guardian have posted one of the first reviews of Runaway.. read below. Clips and captures of last nights episode will be up soon too!

It was quite a relief to turn to the explicit violence of the adaptation of Martina Cole’s bestseller The Runaway (Sky1), set in Cole’s preferred 1960s East End milieu. Kathy is the daughter of Madge, a good-time girl-come-prostitute, who takes up with Eamon. Eamon has a son called Eamon. Kathy and Eamon II grow up together and fall – necessarily secretly, what with the statutory definition of incest being quite far from the working one round them parts – in love.

Eamon II gradually wanders into the gangster hinterlands and, after he shoots a man beating up his friend, is taken up by the local Mr Big. Kathy, meanwhile, kills the man beating up her mother and is taken up by the police. The detective in charge tells Kathy to say she was raped by her victim, and, helpfully, bruises her thighs to support her story – and then frames Madge for the murder. It’s a world of limited choices and bleak prospects – a furious EastEnders with a genuinely hard edge.

It’s all brilliantly, brutally done. The script is workmanlike – the plot’s the thing – but the wonderful cast (including Keith Allen as the hardman, Kierston Wareing as Madge, and with the likes of Alan Cumming and Ken Stott still to come) punches well above its weight. Like any bloodied masochist in the ring, you know you’ll be coming back next week for more of the same.

The Runaway Trailer and Info

Hey guys! So I saw the first ad last night for Martina Cole’s The Runaway, this airs on Thursday 31st March on Sky 1! I absolutely cannot wait,I loved the take so very interesting to see what this is like! Below you can find two different trailers for the show, both feature Kierston briefly. Be sure to check out the site when the show airs as I’ll be bringing you caps and clips!

Some people read one Martina Cole novel and stop there – the books being too nasty for their taste.

So this brutish new series about London criminals based on one of her blockbusters will not please those folk who like to gaze at the pretty cottages on Midsomer Murders or the 1920s fashions on Marple.

It’s an unflinching take on the world of nasty men, prostitutes, abused women and rotten coppers. If DCI Barnaby or Hercule Poirot stumbled into Cole’s world, they would get a knife across the face, a knee in the balls and flung into the gutter – probably by one of the women.
