First Review Of The Runaway

The guardian have posted one of the first reviews of Runaway.. read below. Clips and captures of last nights episode will be up soon too!

It was quite a relief to turn to the explicit violence of the adaptation of Martina Cole’s bestseller The Runaway (Sky1), set in Cole’s preferred 1960s East End milieu. Kathy is the daughter of Madge, a good-time girl-come-prostitute, who takes up with Eamon. Eamon has a son called Eamon. Kathy and Eamon II grow up together and fall – necessarily secretly, what with the statutory definition of incest being quite far from the working one round them parts – in love.

Eamon II gradually wanders into the gangster hinterlands and, after he shoots a man beating up his friend, is taken up by the local Mr Big. Kathy, meanwhile, kills the man beating up her mother and is taken up by the police. The detective in charge tells Kathy to say she was raped by her victim, and, helpfully, bruises her thighs to support her story – and then frames Madge for the murder. It’s a world of limited choices and bleak prospects – a furious EastEnders with a genuinely hard edge.

It’s all brilliantly, brutally done. The script is workmanlike – the plot’s the thing – but the wonderful cast (including Keith Allen as the hardman, Kierston Wareing as Madge, and with the likes of Alan Cumming and Ken Stott still to come) punches well above its weight. Like any bloodied masochist in the ring, you know you’ll be coming back next week for more of the same.

Five Daughters wins RTS award

A BBC drama about the 2006 murders of five women who worked as prostitutes in Ipswich has won a Royal Television Society award.Five Daughters looked at the family relationships and lifestyles of the five victims of Steve Wright, who was convicted of their murders in 2008.The three-part programme won the Drama Serial award.

Philippa Lowthorpe, director, said: “We would like to dedicate this award to the women who lost their lives.”

The judges gave this verdict on Five Daughters:
“This sensitive, skilfully acted dramatisation of an appalling true story made for ground-breaking television.By concentrating on the victims of this terrible crime, the drama succeeded in giving the five women back some dignity and humanity.Powerful and important, this is TV drama at its very best.”

Writer Stephen Butchard was also nominated in the Writer-Drama category which was won by Jack Thorne and Shane Meadows for This Is England ’86.

Gemma Adams, Tania Nicol, Anneli Alderton, Annette Nicholls and Paula Clennell had been working as prostitutes in the Ipswich area when they were murdered.

The writers, actors and producers spent a year researching the story with some of the victims’ relatives, Suffolk police and the Ipswich drugs rehabilitation charity the Iceni Project.

Liz Harsant, the leader of Ipswich Borough Council and a trustee of the Somebody’s Daughter Memorial Fund, said: “We met the actors and producers and all of them were touched by the stories the parents had told them.

“I can’t say how pleased I am that they’ve won the award. It’s not something you want to relive every day of your life, but I think people had to know about it.”

Ms Lowthorpe added: “Our hope is that the drama continues to spark a debate about drug addiction and girls on the street, and for drug charities, like Iceni, to be supported to continue to do the tremendous work they do.

The Runaway Trailer and Info

Hey guys! So I saw the first ad last night for Martina Cole’s The Runaway, this airs on Thursday 31st March on Sky 1! I absolutely cannot wait,I loved the take so very interesting to see what this is like! Below you can find two different trailers for the show, both feature Kierston briefly. Be sure to check out the site when the show airs as I’ll be bringing you caps and clips!

Some people read one Martina Cole novel and stop there – the books being too nasty for their taste.

So this brutish new series about London criminals based on one of her blockbusters will not please those folk who like to gaze at the pretty cottages on Midsomer Murders or the 1920s fashions on Marple.

It’s an unflinching take on the world of nasty men, prostitutes, abused women and rotten coppers. If DCI Barnaby or Hercule Poirot stumbled into Cole’s world, they would get a knife across the face, a knee in the balls and flung into the gutter – probably by one of the women.

Kierston Wareing and Ashley Walters to star in Top Boy cast for Channel 4

Wondeful news guys! Kierston’s been cast in another new project!Read the article below for more info..

Kierston Wareing (It’s A Free World) and Ashley Walters (Hustle, Small Island) join forces with major UK contemporary music stars Kane Robinson aka Kano and Scorcher in an ensemble cast of new four-part thriller Top Boy.

Written by screenwriter and novelist Ronan Bennett (Public Enemies, The Hamburg Cell) and produced by Cowboy Films (The Last King of Scotland, Poppy Shakespeare) for Channel 4, Top Boy is a 4 X 60’ original drama about young lives lived on the edge. The drama looks beyond the headlines about youth crime and delves into the personal stories of those involved.
Filming has begun in and around London this month with director by Yann Demange (Criminal Justice, Dead Set) at the helm. The drama will showcase a fresh and dynamic line up of first time actors, brought together through extensive talent searches across London; combining open auditions and youth workshops, with on-the-spot, street approaches everywhere from bus shelters to Burger Kings.

Meet drug dealer and gang leader Dushane (Ashley Walters). He is charming, sexy, clever, and at 26 years old has “already run out of things to be – except this”. When he gets the attention of ex-convict and drug dealer Bobby Raikes (Geoff Bell) he seizes an opportunity to be more, to have more. With his friend Sully (Kane Robinson) at his side, Dushane is on track to becoming Top Boy.

Dushane and Sully’s violent quest to take over the supply of drugs in the Summerhouse Estate impacts on the lives of a number of the residents. The emotional heart of the story lies with Ra’Nell (Malcolm Kamulete), a bright 13-year-old struggling to create a stable home environment for his mentally ill mother Lisa (Sharon Duncan Brewster). Ra’Nell’s best friend Gem (Giacomo Mancini) will do anything to be accepted into Dushane’s gang whilst Summerhouse resident Heather (Kierston Wareing), pregnant and penniless, is determined to give her baby the chances she never had – “even if it means doing one wrong thing to get to the right place”.

Top Boy is based on months of first hand research by writer and Hackney resident Ronan Bennett and story consultant Gerry Jackson. Jackson, a fitness coach, was born and raised in Hackney and has, over the years, worked with the kids there to motivate and encourage them to keep clear of the drug and gang culture. He was able to set up meetings and interviews with local kids who gave candid accounts of life on the estates. This extensive research forms the basis of Bennett’s scripts.

Writer Ronan Bennett says: “I knew that I wanted to write about this world from the bottom up, from the point of view, not of the police, but of the tinies and youngers I saw every day hanging around the supermarket forecourt. So I asked Gerry if he would introduce me to kids on the street. Although I was interested in hearing about the mechanics of drug dealing, I wanted to know about the lives these kids lived. What were their homes like? Did they go to school? What did they think about their parents and teachers? What music did they like? Clothes? What did they want from life? Some of their stories were brutal and frightening. Others were sad and some were unintentionally funny – “I didn’t get focused on making money until I was 13,” one younger said wistfully, “all them wasted years.” I came to realise that the lives I was glimpsing on the supermarket forecourt were a lot more complex, deep and rich than I’d imagined. I wanted Top Boy to look at the fabric of life in a world we hear a lot about, but about which we know a lot less than we think.”

Head of drama Camilla Campbell says: “Ronan’s script is not only honest and contemporary, due to the vast research with the kids and their extraordinary stories – it is also gripping, funny and entertaining. It will be a striking piece of drama that is perfect for Channel 4.”
